A gang of 10 armed men on Friday night kidnapped a 78-year old man at his home in Obokwu Amaisi Uvuru in Aboh Mbaise Council area of Imo State and whisked him away to an unknown destination.
The victim, Evaristus Amakor Onyenso, had planned to have a family thanksgiving service today (Sunday) at Christ the King Catholic Church, Uvuru, for which two of his sons, who reside in Turkey and Finland respectively, had returned home.
According to a family member who pleaded anonymity, the gunmen, who came in a bus, had an easy access to the house, as the main gate to the compound was still open.
“The gunmen, who were about 10 in number, came in through the main gate because it was not locked yet, as one of the family members had gone outside to buy something.
“We were surprised to see armed men inside the compound, who ordered everybody to lie down, after which they tied us up and confiscated our mobile phones”, he said.
He added: “They ransacked every room in the compound and carted away valuables and money and then they dragged Mr. Evaristus Onyenso to their waiting bus and zoomed away”.
When contacted, the Imo State Police Command spokesman, Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), who confirmed the incident, said the police had spread their dragnet to nab the suspected kidnappers.
